About Kontroller Kulture
A DC-based community violence intervention initiative using gaming as a gateway to long-term character formation.
Gaming is the hook. Growth is the goal.
Kontroller Kulture is a DC-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that uses professional-grade gaming as a way in — a reason for young people to show up, stay engaged, and do the work that actually matters.
We operate in DPR recreation centers across Washington, DC, five days a week. Every session is structured: attendance is mandatory, literacy work comes before play, and gameplay itself is coached for emotional regulation, teamwork, and professional conduct.
The youths we serve are often disconnected from school, at risk of justice involvement, or returning from it. We meet them where the interest already is — and build outward from there.
How it works
Show up
Every session starts with sign-in. Attendance is tracked, logged, and shared with partner agencies. Showing up is the first non-negotiable.
Work before play
Before touching a controller, participants complete literacy modules, professional development tasks, or behavioral check-ins. Gaming time is earned, not given.
Coached competition
Gameplay is facilitated, not free. Our facilitators coach emotional regulation, teamwork, and conflict resolution in real time during competitive sessions.
The problem is measurable. So is our response.
DC's youth are facing compounding crises — chronic absenteeism, disconnection from school, and rising violence involvement. We don't just name the problem. We show up five days a week with a structured response and report outcomes to every partner.
